Freezing meals ahead of time is a great way to ensure you stay on track with your meal plan. Unfortunately, not all foods freeze and reheat well. Here are our freezing tips to ensure you’re freezing foods safely to get the best quality meals.
Ensure your fridge and freezer are set to the correct temperature to keep your foods out of the “danger zone”, to prevent the growth of food-poisoning bacteria. Your fridge should ideally be at 5 degrees Celsius or below, and your freezer below -15 degrees Celsius. It’s a good idea to invest in a thermometer to keep an eye on these temperatures.
It’s important to freeze food in realistic sized portions, that is, what you need for one meal. You don’t want to defrost a whole stew made to serve six, if you only want one meal out of it!
Make sure you place foods in a sealed container or wrap them in air tight glad wrap before freezing to prevent freezer burn.
Only refreeze foods if you are cooking in between. For example, if you thaw beef mince then turn it into Bolognese, it’s okay to refreeze the new dish.
Labelling food with a description is a must. It can be hard to tell what the food actually is once it’s frozen. Also put the date that it was frozen on the label to ensure you don’t eat the food past the use by date. If in doubt with dates, throw it out.
Don’t wait until the food is old and losing quality before freezing. Freezing will only maintain the quality, not improve it. If you buy something and don’t intend to use it in the next three days, then it’s a good idea to freeze it to maintain its quality.
After removing your meal from the freezer, place it on a tray and put it on the bottom shelf of the fridge to defrost before using.
