Spring Clean Your Routine

The days are longer and the temperature is heating up - the cold veil of winter has finally risen.

Spring is a great time to get stuck into an exercise routine. There’s a general feeling of optimism and potential in the air which we can harness to improve ourselves and those around us. As we start to get more hours of sunlight in the day, it becomes easier to get out earlier or later in the day to fit in some exercise.

Take advantage of the weather and look at doing as much exercise outside as possible. Instead of jumping on the treadmill why not get out for a walk or run? Instead of lifting weights at the gym why not pop down to your local park and do some resistance training using your body weight and a theraband? Exercising outside has been shown to increase the mental benefits of exercise – greater relaxation afterwards and increased feelings of euphoria.

Another great exercise mode for spring and summer is swimming. Swimming is a fantastic exercise for cardiovascular health and burning fat while exercising. Exercise in the pool does not have to be constrained to swimming laps. Doing body weight exercises like squats or lunges or more cardio type exercise such as walking or running can all be completed in the pool. The nature of water based exercise also means that this type of exercise puts less stress on your joints and can be particularly beneficial for elderly persons or those with arthritis or an acute musculoskeletal injury.

Free Council Classes

During the warmer months, many local councils put on free exercise classes. Regardless of what type of exercise you are interested in, there should be an option suitable for you. If you are looking to do more resistance training and core type exercises then why not try a Pilates class? For those of us who like to move and/or shake it, try a Zumba class – this is a lot of fun with a group of people! There is also water aerobics and Bubacise – a class specifically for mums with bubs.

Visit your council's website for more information on what's available in your area.

Slip, Slop, Slap

Stay sun safe and always apply sunscreen and wear adequate clothing when exercising during the day. Remember to adequately hydrate before and after your exercise session as well.
