The Journey So Far: Ralda

Tell us a bit about yourself?

I am an almost 60 year old working Grandmother. I have spent the last 26 years working at the Royal Brisbane Women’s Hospital… and now I am a full-time shopaholic.

Tell us what led you/motivated you to join the Wesley LifeShape Clinic Program?

I felt unhealthy and thought it was now or never. I looked for a credible program that offered healthy weight loss options, not just an easy fix. My goal was to change my lifestyle long-term, not just my weight.

Had you tried any diets / programs in the past? Were they successful? How has the WLC program been different to these?

Oh, yes! My previous weight loss attempts didn’t offer the long term support and guidance. I enjoy the structure of the program, and my dietitian has kept me motivated throughout the weight loss phase and is now supporting me through the maintenance phase… which to me is more important than the weight loss itself.

What has been the hardest part about trying to lose weight? How have you overcome this / these obstacle(s)?

On this program, my inner motivation has made it easy for me... I was ready to change. With the nutrition education and resources provided, it has made the process easier for me. I have learnt so much about food and nutrition and realise now that calories aren’t just calories, it’s much more than that.

How do you feel with your progress so far?

I have reached my goal and I am very happy with my progress. I needed to do this for my own health & wellbeing and I was ready to change. I am never going back to my previous behaviours.

Has your weight loss so far generated any health benefits?

Absolutely. At 60, you’ve got aches and pains, bad back and knees… and with diet and exercise, I feel like I’ve got a lot more energy, I feel healthy mentally and physically. I now want to exercise and have found great enjoyment in this (which I never thought I would).

What aspect(s) of the WLC program do you think have been most helpful so far?

Ongoing support from all of the health professionals (dietitian, doctor, exercise physiologist & client services staff) who have all been supportive of my goal.

Have you encouraged anyone else to join the WLC program since starting?

I haven’t, and not because I don’t want to. My weight loss has been the talk of the hospital and therefore, the program and my determination speaks for itself.

How do you feel moving into the second half of your program?

To me, this is going to be the most important part of the program. Losing the weight has been easy with the ongoing support & motivation, but keeping it off is the ultimate goal. At this moment in time I am 100% committed to that goal, and my mantra is “I am never going back”.
