The Best Basic Burger

Makes 6 serves

Ingredients:

Patty

  • 600g lean mince meat (choose from beef, lamb, chicken or veal, whatever you fancy!)
  • 1-2 cloves of garlic to taste
  • 3 medium carrots grated (approximately 1 cup)
  • 3 medium zucchini grated (approximately 1 cup)
  • 1-2 medium onions finely diced (approximately 1 cup)
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh continental parsley (or other desired herbs)
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs, made from day old bread
  • Salt and ground black pepper, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil

Yoghurt Sauce

  • 100g Low fat natural yoghurt
  • ½ teaspoon English mustard
  • A squeeze of lemon juice

Extras

  • 6 wholegrain buns, halved (lightly toasted)
  • 150g-cheddar cheese, thinly sliced, to serve (optional)
  • 3 medium (about 450g) ripe tomatoes, sliced, to serve
  • Homemade yoghurt sauce – see above (or other desired sauce) to serve
  • 6 Iceberg lettuce leaves, shredded, to serve
  • Optional: add any other salad ingredients as desired (mashed avocado, beetroot, capsicum)

Method

  1. Combine the mince with the garlic, carrots, zucchini, onions, egg, breadcrumbs, parsley and seasoning and mix together well with clean hands.
  2. Once mixed together, shape into burgers, either small or large depending on your preference and bun size.
  3. To make ‘Yoghurt sauce” combine the three ingredients (yoghurt, mustard and lemon juice together well and place into a serving bowl).
  4. Pre heat the BBQ or your pan to a moderate heat.
  5. Lightly brush the burgers with olive oil.
  6. When moderate temperature is reached add the burgers and cook for approximately 6-8 minutes on each side (depending on size and thickness) or until they are cooked through.
  7. Transfer the burgers to a plate, set aside and keep warm.
  8. If you are toasting the buns then, preheat grill on high. Place the hamburger buns, cut-side up, under the preheated grill and toast for 1 minute or until golden. Leave the grill on.
  9. To serve, top the bottom halves of the toasted hamburger buns with the burgers and then the cheese. Grill the bottom bun halves under the grill for 1 minute or until the cheese just melts. Then add sliced tomato, yoghurt sauce, shredded lettuce and any other desired toppings and then cover with the hamburger bun tops.
  10. Now, settle down with friends and family and enjoy the footy game!
