Healthy Alternatives to Coffee

Too much caffeine each day can not only influence sleep and anxiety but the calories in your cuppa of choice may also be impacting on your weight management. Each person has their own individual level of tolerance with caffeine but the good rule of thumb is to aim for no more than 3 caffeinated drinks per day.

Simple Switches

Once you assess how many you are having and what is realistic for you, you may like to consider some simple switches which can cut down the calories in your drinks.

  • Large size to small. This will not only save you money but reduce your calories without too much effort.
  • Did you know that each cup of full cream milk is 170 calories? By switching full cream to skim milk you can save 70 calories per cup.
  • Sugar to artificial sweetener is another easy substitute if you find that you need that sweet fix.

Awesome Alternatives

The other option is to consider some alternatives to coffee completely:

  • Tea – There are so many flavours on the market including green, ginger, peppermint and turmeric to only name a few. Each have their own unique benefits and can be the perfect hit on a cold winter’s day. Try a few to find your favourite brew!
  • Hot chocolate – brands such as Avalanche Hot Drinking Chocolate or Jarrah Choc o Lait offer a healthier, low calorie twist on traditional hot chocolate.
  • Hot water – Add a slice of lemon or sip as is for a cheap, easy and warm option.
  • Kombucha – a new kid on the market and trending at the moment, Kombucha is actually fermented tea. It’s low calorie and boasts some gut health benefits. It can even be home brewed if you are up for a science experiment. Otherwise keep an eye out at your local supermarket and health food stores.
