“Growing up with weight issues was always hard – I was often teased and ridiculed. Most of the women in my life were also overweight. I often thought this is just going to be the way I look for the rest of my life.”
Throughout her career and motherhood, Karen did not often prioritise her own health, resulting in unhealthy habits.
“When it was tough, I would convince myself I deserved certain foods. I didn’t understand the reasons why I was eating the way I did. Food would dominate my life at times and I hated it.”
Karen tried many weight loss options over the years, but nothing resulted in long term success.
“My life became a string of crash diets – I’d lose weight, put it back on, lose it again. It was a love-hate relationship. Bombarded with a tsunami of weight loss advice, I needed something with a solid base and structure. I didn’t like sitting in a room with other women and talking about what I ate that day – that wasn’t for me.”
After hearing about LifeShape through some close friends, Karen finally decided there was no better time to commit to her own health and wellbeing.
“I had two close friends who completed Wesley LifeShape Programs over 10 years ago, and both have kept the weight off ever since. I was ready to make the change for myself, and my husband was right behind me and very supportive.”
Karen was very impressed with the high caliber of support her Wesley team provided.

“For me, the weight loss has been secondary. The way I think about myself and my health now has been the biggest victory.”
As somebody who previously never really liked to workout, Karen found the exercise aspects of the program easy to incorporate into her everyday lifestyle. The personally tailored exercise program was easier than she had anticipated.
“Now, I exercise about six days per week. I walk and go for bike rides, I don’t find it hard to motivate myself anymore. My once a week treat is riding to the coffee shop with my husband and then having a coffee and a scone.”
As a mother and grandmother, Karen’s family were one of the main motivators behind her new lifestyle.
“I watched my own mother go through two knee replacements, and one hip replacement. As a grandmother now myself, I didn’t want to get to the point where I couldn’t be active. I wanted to make sure I could run around the park with my grandson.”
After an astonishing 28kg weight loss on her LifeShape 9 program^, Karen’s mindset towards herself has completely changed, and she is positive about what lies ahead.
“When I felt like giving up, I would remember how far I have come. Why would I ever want to go backwards?”

“It’s a little bit like launching your child out into the real world! But the most important thing I have learnt to do is trust myself. And I know if I ever needed to, I can always go back and touch base with my clinical team.”
