As a freelance writer and busy stay-at-home dad, Damian came to the realisation he wanted to regain control of his weight. “Our daughter turned two and I decided that something needed to change before it was too late,” says Damian.
After seeing a friend experiencing long term success from the LifeShape program, Damian felt the direct support the program offered could work for him too.
“Weekly dietitian appointments and support from a psychologist, an exercise physiologist and a GP were very appealing,” says Damian. “I wanted to get to the bottom of whether there was something specific to me that made it harder to control my weight than for other people. I had lost a lot of weight a few years ago, then put most of it on again. I felt like the lack of control I had over my eating ran parallel with other things in my life and that maybe sorting out the food issues would sort out other things.”
One of the biggest differences Damian noticed about the LifeShape program was how personalised the program was to his individual needs and lifestyle. Due to this, he was quick to see results, even in the first few weeks.
“My progress was brilliant,” says Damian. “The support is tremendous and everything about the program was customised to me. I lost about 1kg per week for the entire time I was on the program – a bit more in the first weeks. I’m working on maintaining it now, which has its own struggles, but I feel I have the tools to manage. I feel generally healthier and my blood analysis is totally normal on all measures, so my risk of diabetes and other obesity related illnesses is WAY down. I am also generally more active and fitter. I can run around with the children without getting so puffed out, and I have more energy throughout the day.”
Other than the increased health benefits, Damian also finds himself proactively seeking ways to be more active after his 21.2kg weight loss^.
“I have rearranged aspects of my lifestyle so that I drive less and walk more – including moving my daughter to a different daycare centre so her daycare, my son’s school and my office are all within walking distance of home and each other,” explains Damian. “I run more now too – it started when I realised I could save 15 minutes on my commute to my dietitian appointment if I ran part of the way instead of walking. I find myself wanting to run now – even if it’s just to get to the pedestrian crossing before the lights change – when I would avoid it before.”
While pleased with his success on the program, it wasn’t without its challenges. To help with his, Damian has opted to join a support program, with periodic check in points with his core Dietitian.
“I think I became a bit of a diet bore for a while,” says Damian. “Now I see myself like a reformed smoker who still feels the tug of cigarettes – the desire is still there so I need to be constantly mindful about eating and my activity levels. I wouldn’t tell someone, “You should do the WLC program” because people need to find it themselves. But I am certainly very open about my success, how I believe it helped me and happy to suggest that they consider it.”
Damian’s advice for anyone thinking of joining a program?
“Take the risk. Make the call. Get started,” urges Damian. “At the very worst, you’ll end up back where you are now, but the upside is that you may completely change yourself for the better. And keep a bit of cash aside because you will probably have to buy a whole new wardrobe!”
